Major Gifts Officer

The Major Gifts Officer identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards high-net-worth individuals, families, corporations, and foundations capable of making major and leadership-level charitable contributions (typically $10,000-$1M+). The role manages a portfolio of qualified prospects and donors, develops personalized engagement strategies, and closes gifts that directly support hospital priorities, including patient services, equipment, facilities, and programs of excellence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR EQUIVALENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or CFRE preferred

Experience: 3-7 years of major gifts fundraising with five and six figure success; healthcare experience preferred

Proven track record of securing five and six figure gifts

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team

Familiarity with donor databases – Donor Perfect CRM system for fundraising

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

· Word processing (WordPerfect or Microsoft Word)

· Editing and proofing skills

· Excel spreadsheets and Donor Perfect

· Ability to relate to individuals from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds

· Ability to negotiate effectively and gain cooperation from others to ensure a common direction of the overall program

· Excellent oral and communication skills

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

· Position requires simple manipulative skills such as typing, eye-hand coordination and ability to sit for prolonged periods of time

· Should be independent in mobility skills and able to hear normal sounds with some background noise as in telephone use

· Position requires ability to concentrate on details with some interruptions, moderate attention span, conceptualization skills and ability to remember multiple tasks over long periods of time

· Employees may be constantly exposed to electro-magnetic radiation with use of computers

· Office based with local travel for donor engagement

3.1 Demonstrates adherence to the Environment of Care plans of the Hospital as indicated by following established procedures and making recommendations to improve safety.

3.2 Assesses environment for safety hazards which could harm self, employees, or guests and eliminates the hazard (or contacts appropriate personnel who will remove hazards) which might result in injury and time lost from work.

3.3 Consistently utilizes proper body mechanics/ergonomic recommendations in performance of responsibilities, as evidenced by supervisor’s observation and no injury to self or others due to improper work habits.

3.4 Attend all mandatory hospital-wide education including training on state and federal and external regulations and guidelines, such as HIPAA, PPS, JCAHO, CARF, OSHA, etc. This includes direct responsibility for:

3.4.2 Correct Application of any action related to NPSG in appropriate situations

3.4.3 Reporting concerns related to NPSG situations

3.5 Performs responsibilities with attention to compliance with all hospital policies, state and federal statutes, regulations and guidelines while maintaining effective utilization of resources and cost efficiency.

3.6 Displays initiative in contributing ideas for improving the efficiency/effectiveness of the department throughout the year as it relates to process improvement and the hospital-wide standards of ethics and corporate compliance.

3.7 Adheres to moral, business and legal obligation to maintain security and confidentiality of protected health information.

3.8 Fulfills duty to report all security breaches as identified.

4. Major Gifts Strategy & Fundraising

a. Develop and implement comprehensive major gift strategies aligned with hospital fundraising goals, clinical priorities, and long-term strategic plans

b. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of making gifts at the $10,000-$50,000+ level, including capital, and planned gifts

c. Create individualized cultivation and solicitation plans, including timing and messaging

d. Prepare and present written gift proposals and cases for support linked to patient care impact

5. Donor Cultivation, Stewardship, and Engagement

a. Build long-term relationships grounded in trust and donor intent

b. Develop stewardship plans demonstrating philanthropic impact

c. Ensure timely acknowledgement, recognition, and fulfillment of donor intent

d. Coordinate donor recognition and naming agreements per policy

e. Works independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities, develop funding proposals and negotiate structure

6. Portfolio & Prospect Management

a. Manage a portfolio of approximately 75-100 major gift prospects and donors

b. Qualify new prospects through research, grateful patient leads, referrals, and analytics

c. Schedule, conduct, and document donor interactions

d. Establish annual fundraising and activity goals and track progress

7. Collaboration with Clinical, Executive, and Board Leadership

a. Partner with executives and board members to engage donors

b. Participate in joint solicitations and donor visits

8. Campaigns and Special Initiatives

a. Support capital campaigns, grateful patient programs, and associate giving

b. Coordinate donor events, tours, and recognition activities

c. Works cooperatively and collaboratively with others and accepts directions from supervisor

d. Contribute to campaign planning and prospect strategies

9. Reporting, Compliance, and Ethics

a. Maintain accurate donor records and CRM documentation

b. Comply with HIPAA and healthcare fundraising regulations

c. Uphold ethical fundraising standards and confidentiality
