Functional Neurologic Disorder

What is Functional Neurologic Disorder (FND)?

FND is a common condition which impacts how the brain communicates with itself, different parts of the body, and the outside world. When communication is altered or disrupted, it can affect both physical and neurological functions including:

·        Movement

·        Thinking and reasoning

·        Sensory functions

·        Communication

·        Emotions

FND deals with the functioning of the nervous system rather than a physical or structural issue. This causes patients to suffer from genuine involuntary physical or sensory symptoms. Symptoms may start and progress quickly, but for some patients, they may be intermittent.

Siskin Hospital’s Interdisciplinary Approach

Siskin Hospital’s FND program is made up of a specialized care team including physical, occupational, and speech therapists, as well as neuropsychologists/psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, and physicians specialized in physical rehabilitation. Applying the latest in evidence-based practices, the team collaborates to create an individualized treatment plan focused on regulating the nervous system, implementing strategies for approaching difficult functional tasks, and improving overall quality of life.

Common Symptoms of FND:

·        Epileptic-like seizures

·        Involuntary movements

·        Gait and balance problems

·        Paralysis or weakness

·        Brain fog or memory loss
