Siskin Hospital’s 15th Annual Possibilities Luncheon, a sold-out event, was held Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
Will was just two years old when his father, Christopher, became a quadriplegic after a horseback riding accident. While the world knew him as “Superman,” Will grew up knowing him simply as “Dad.” He says living with a family member’s disability didn’t seem unusual since his mother, Dana, tried to give him as a normal a childhood as possible.
When his father died, Will was 11, and two years later, his mother Dana died from lung cancer, leaving him orphaned at 13. Looking back, Will says “everything that my parents did inspired me.” His heritage of joy and hope from these two amazing people drives him to continue their legacy as an ambassador for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which benefits spinal cord injuries. He is also a leader in the Reeve Foundation Champions Committee which is dedicated to fostering multi-generational involvement in the cause.
Will Reeve joined ESPN in August 2014 as a contributor to SportsCenter. His role is to bring his unique perspective to stories in order to appeal to younger sports fans while resonating with all ESPN viewers.
Will contributes to SportsCenter and ESPN across all platforms, focusing on stories that highlight the humanity in sports. One example is the “Why We Love Sports Today” series, which shares stories that touch sports fans emotionally and encourages viewers to engage with the ESPN brand through multiple platforms. Prior to the Possibilities Luncheon, Will joined Chattanooga’s Press Row on ESPN 105.1 The Zone to talk about the passon for sports he shared with his father. Listen to the audio.
The Possibilities Luncheon gives us the opportunity to highlight the courage and success of some of our remarkable former patients. They share their miraculous stories of recovery in a heartwarming video.
This year’s patient honoree was Mike Wilson, who suffered a spinal cord injury from totally unexpected surgery complications. Instead of an overnight stay in the hospital, Mike ended up in Vanderbilt’s ICU, paralyzed from the chest down. His surgeon recommended Siskin Hospital for rehabilitation, and Mike and his wife Cindy were glad to be closer to their home in Georgia. From the moment Mike was wheeled into Siskin Hospital, he set his mind to walking out on his own. Mike, a Navy veteran, was disciplined and determined and pushed himself to improve on each day’s progress, culminating on the day when he did indeed walk out on his own two feet.
