Tai Chi, which originated in China as a martial art, is one of the most popular mind-body practices in complementary and alternative medicine. Often referred to as "moving meditation," the slow, graceful and flowing movements of Tai Chi are known for providing enormous health benefits for people of various age groups and health conditions.
A number of studies have demonstrated the positive effects of Tai Chi on individuals with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Fibromyalgia, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, and Spinal Cord Injury.

Tai Chi is safe for everyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, and can be modified for most health problems. People with limited mobility -- even those in wheelchairs -- can learn and successfully use Tai Chi. Tai Chi is not meant to replace medical care for a serious condition.

Classes are taught one day per week. Many practitioners recommend practicing Tai Chi for about 15 - 20 minutes twice daily at home, since regular practice is essential for mastering the forms and achieving lasting results. Dr. Zibin Guo, Lead Instructor, has an instructional DVD available for purchase. Please ask the Fitness Center staff for more information. The first class is free. A range of payment options are available, starting at $2.50 per class. Please contact the Fitness Center for the most current class pricing. A limited number of classes may be covered by your health insurance. Please contact the Fitness Center to arrange for a screening to determine your eligibility.
Dr. Zibin Guo is a UC Foundation Professor of Medical Anthropology specializing in cross-cultural healing and medical systems; complementary medicine, community health, and culture & disability studies. In 2008, the Wheelchair Tai Chi Program he developed was debuted at 2008 Paralympics. Since then it has not only become a part of national health promotion programs in China, but it also has been adapted in various rehab and self-care settings throughout the world.
Dr. William "John" Johnson is a board certified chiropractic orthopedist, a diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management, and the International Academy of Clinical Acupuncture. A long time Chinese martial arts practitioner, Dr. Johnson is also a certified Tai Chi instructor and has been teaching and conducting training workshops on Tai Chi and rehabilitation throughout the country for several years. Dr. Johnson has instructed the Tai Chi Program at Siskin Hospital since 2008.
