Adaptive Sports and Hobbies
Siskin Hospital is a strong advocate for Adaptive Sports and Recreation. If you are interested in being active again and have a particular interest in sports or other hobbies, Siskin Hospital can assist you with resources and equipment options available. Sometimes, it is very difficult to know where to start after acquiring a disability and being in physical rehabilitation.
There are possibilities to enjoy life again!
For example, if you want to play golf again or learn more about how to play this game even from a wheelchair, we can help. Even if you have never tried or participated in a specific activity, there are opportunities.
Adaptive Golf Program
Beginning in 2008, Siskin Hospital has hosted and worked closely with the National Amputee Golf Association's (NAGA) First Swing Golf Clinics. The purpose of these clinics
have been to help bring therapists and golf professionals together to help teach and encourage someone with a disability how to play or return to the game of golf. These free clinics will be offered on an ongoing basis.
The clinics encourage individuals with a disability, as well as professionals in the field of rehabilitation or golf, to learn about adaptive resources and methods of playing golf. Hands-on instruction allows for the individual to correctly accommodate their golf style to allow for maximum potential on the course.
Siskin Hospital's History of Adaptive Sports
From 1999-2009, Siskin Hospital sponsored a team in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) known as the Siskin Rebounders. This team would travel to other states to compete against other NWBA teams as well as host one big tournament here in Chattanooga every year. The rules and level of physical contact in this game are almost the same as able-bodied college basketball. The only exception is that the chair is

part of the player's body, performing all the quick moves, sprints, pivots and body-bumping picks required by the sport. In 2005, the Rebounders won the NWBA National Championship Division III Game.
Siskin Hospital has also hosted National USTA Wheelchair Tennis Tournaments here in Chattanooga in the past. Players would travel here to compete in the USTA national rankings. Wheelchair Tennis is not just for individuals who use a wheelchair for daily mobility, but it is also for anyone whose knee or hip replacement surgery, prosthetic or lower mobility challenge limit their ability to play tennis in a standing position successfully. This game is a great venue for fitness, as well as an excellent way to participate in shared activities with friends and family members with and without disabilities!
