PATIENT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Lymphedema

The Siskin Hospital Lymphedema Clinic effectively treats and manages lymphedema through manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression, exercise and skin care. Manual lymphatic drainage uses a gentle, massage-like technique to stimulate the lymphatic vessels to move lymph fluid. Compression involves the use of specialized bandages and garments to promote lymphatic flow, and prevent fluid from accumulating after it's removal. Exercise maximizes the effect of compression by stimulating the lymphatic system to move lymph fluid away from the skin. Because the skin of lymphedema patients is stretched beyond normal, it is at risk. Any break in the skin may be an entry site for infection-causing bacteria.

This four-part approach is executed by therapists certified in lymphedema treatment. Patients are educated patients about self-care techniques and management of the condition.

This program is the only hospital based clinic in Chattanooga and offers the advantage of a team of in-house experts including wound care specialists, physiatrists, case managers, and physical and occupational therapists.

In addition, the Clinic offers free garment fittings, screenings and a monthly support group. For more information about the Lymphedema Clinic at Siskin Hospital, call 423.634.1246.

Charity Care and Donation

To alleviate the cost burden of treatment and compression garments, Siskin Hospital accepts donations specifically for lymphedema patients. For more information on how you can make a difference in the lives of our patients, click here.
