Constraint Induced Therapy

The Constraint Induced Therapy Program at Siskin Hospital increases the function of an arm or leg affected by weakness due to stroke or traumatic brain injury.
Based on research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, this highly successful method of treatment requires motivation and a strong commitment from the patient. The five-day a week, three week long program involves restraining the stronger limb for 90% of the patient’s day, even outside of therapy. By practicing functional activities and specific exercises using only the weaker limb, the patient's brain activity increases and learns to no longer depend only on the stronger side.
