Tuesday's Fitness Tip
by Danny Myer, Certified Personal Trainer & Supervisor at the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
Keep Yourself Injury Free
Proper Warm-up
What a good warm-up is depends not only on the specific activity you are about to undertake, but also the intensity level at which you will be exercising. For example, before you head out for a moderately paced jog, not much of a warm-up is necessary. However, if you are getting ready to take on a 10K, you need to include a warm-up that increases your heart rate, breathing rate and blood flow to the muscles.
Muscular Balance
No matter what your fitness activity of choice is, in addition to proper warm-up, you need to engage in strength training that focuses on muscular balance. For example, if you do three sets of leg extensions to strengthen your quadriceps, you need to balance it out with three sets of hamstring curls to ensure muscle equity. The same principle applies for your upper body muscles and core strengthening routine. It is easy to remember to work your abdominals, because like most of us, we all want flat abs. However, you must remember to give your back muscles equal time, especially if you want to avoid muscular imbalance that can lead to chronic back pain.
Cross-Training
Another important injury prevention tool is cross training. Perhaps you are wondering, “what is cross-training and what exactly does it mean to me?” It means you need to step outside of your comfort zone and mix-it-up. It is important to force yourself to engage in other fitness activities outside of your sport or regular workout routine.
Cross training is essential for injury prevention because it gives your muscles a break from the stresses you normally put on them during your regular activity. This enhances muscle recovery and also helps to reduce muscular imbalances. Cross training can enhance the balance of strength and flexibility.

Easy Tips to Remember When Dining Out
1. If you know the menu from the restaurant you're going to, plan what you're going to have ahead of time. This will help save you from making a last minute decision that could result in high-calorie choices.
2. Drink at least one full-glass of water before eating your meal. This helps your digestive process, and, because you'll feel full sooner, you will eat less.
3. Don't be afraid to ask for the "senior citizen" special or kid's-sized portions. Most restaurants will accommodate you -- and often you'll pay less as well!
4. Order first. That way you're much less likely to be influenced by the choices of your companions.
5. If you're not sure how something is prepared, don't be afraid to ask. And if the dish is cooked in oil or butter, you can always ask if they have a "fat free" option.

Siskin Hospital Offers New Communication Skills Group
to Help with Ongoing Communication Impairments
Chattanooga, TN-Siskin Hospital is now offering a new Communication Skills Group. This group is designed to provide ongoing support to individuals with communication impairments, such as Aphasia.
The Speech-Language Pathologists at Siskin Hospital work daily with adults who have sustained a loss of communication abilities. However, sometimes individuals with Aphasia still need assistance even after therapy ends. This group will ensure that these individuals can receive additional services to address social and conversational skills to help with continuation of progress, when there is difficulty with expression.
The Communication Skills Group will meet weekly at the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital. A licensed Speech-Language Pathologist will lead each session. Group members will be guided though engaging activities to practice expressing themselves and increase their confidence using a variety of communication strategies. The support and learning from others who have similar needs will be an added benefit of this group.
"We've seen the need to provide further opportunities for our patients that are not offered anywhere else in Chattanooga. It is helpful for those with Aphasia to keep relationships that will help maintain the gains made in therapy and to further practice communication," Will Hutchinson, Speech-Language Pathologist at Siskin Hospital, explained.
To participate in the Communication Skills Group, please call Betty Penley at 423.634.1579 or email at bpenley@siskinrehab.org. At this time, only six participants will be accepted and it is not necessary to be currently enrolled in a formal therapy program to participate. The cost is $30 for four sessions (Members of the Fitness Center) and $45 for four sessions (Non-Members of the Fitness Center.)
Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to use language, but does not affect intelligence. Aphasia impairs the ability to speak and understand others, and people with Aphasia may experience difficulty reading and writing. According to the National Aphasia Association, Aphasia affects about one million Americans - or 1 in 250 people - and is more common than Parkinson's Disease, Cerebral Palsy or Muscular Dystrophy. More than 100,000 Americans acquire the disorder each year; however, most people have never heard of it.

Tuesday's Fitness Tip
by Danny Myer, Certified Personal Trainer & Supervisor at the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
4 Common Fitness Mistakes
Mistake #1: You Aim to Stay in the Fat-Burning Zone
Many cardio machines tell you when you're above and below the zone. But this reason for sticking to low-intensity exercise has been completely debunked. Low-intensity exercise does burn a higher percent of fat compared to carbohydrates but at much lower levels. Doing high-intensity exercise burns more total calories and research has shown you will burn more fat calories over the same length of time.
The Solution: There's nothing wrong with low-intensity exercise, particularly if you have joint problems, but to lose weight, you'll probably need to exercise much longer for the same results.
Mistake #2: You Skip the Warm-Up
Your body needs to warm up so that blood flow increases, the nervous system wakes up and the body starts to use energy and oxygen more efficiently.
The Solution: You can try dynamic stretches, which are moves that take your body through the range of motions you're about to do. For example: high knees, butt kicks, and forward, reverse, and side lunges. It is recommended that you avoid static stretching, where you're holding poses for several counts. That actually calms the system down and can impair performance.
Mistake #3: You Overcrunch Your Abs
If you're doing more than three sets of 15, you're wasting your time! Doing extra crunches are not going to do much for your waistline they only work your rectus abdominus, which is only one of the four muscles in your abdominal wall. The other three, deeper muscles (internal obliques, external obliques and transverse abdominis) give you a leaner look by helping you with your posture.
The Solution: Take a temporary break from your usual crunches and target your obliques and transverse abdominis. Exercises such as planks, side planks and medicine ball twists will help targeting those other muscles.
Mistake #4: You've Been Doing the Same Weight Circuit Since Forever
The reason it seems easy isn't because you're getting stronger and stronger... It's because your muscles have adapted to the program and are bored.
The Solution: You need to change things up, so try using the machines, free weights and resistance bands. You can vary the number of reps, amount of weight, length of rest periods between sets, number of sets and the overall number of exercises.

Tuesday Fitness Tip by Danny Myer, Certified Personal Trainer & Supervisor at the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
Are you concerned because you're working out and gaining weight at the same time? Many people work out and diet in order to lose excess pounds, but sometimes they gain weight instead. Here are three reasons this might be happening to you:
1. Muscle Is Denser Than Fat - If your workout routine is focused on strength training, you may have noticed an improvement in your muscle tone. Strength training builds stronger and bigger muscles, and this is actually a good thing for both men and women.
2. Too Many Calories - Just because you are working out is no excuse to eat more than you should. Sometimes, people consume mroe calories without knowing it. If your goal is to lose weight, dieting and exercise should go together. In order to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn in a day.
3. Not Getting Enough Sleep - You may be surprised to learn that lack of sleep can be the reason why you're gaining weight while working out. Lack of sleep puts extra stress on your body, and it will cope by storing fat more efficiently. Besides, your body won't be able to function properly if it's not well rested.

Trisha Meili to Speak at the 10th Anniversary of the Possibilities Luncheon Benefiting Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation Patients
Chattanooga, TN- Siskin Hospital is proud to announce that Trisha Meili will be the guest speaker at the 10th Anniversary of the "Possibilities: Siskin Hospital Celebrates Life Beyond Disability" Luncheon on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. The Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
Trisha Meili's story is about the capacity of the human body and spirit to heal. It is a story of hope and possibility; however, it didn't begin that way. On April 19, 1989, Trisha went for a run in New York City's Central Park shortly after 9 p.m. Hours later, two men found her near death from a brutal assault. In a coma, with 80 percent blood loss, a traumatic brain injury and severe exposure, doctors at Metropolitan Hospital worried that this young woman might not survive. The story seized headlines, not only in New York City, but also around the world.
Trisha revealed her amazing story of survival and recovery fourteen years later in her best-selling memoir, "I Am the Central Park Jogger: A Story of Hope & Possibility." The horror of the attack brought an outpouring of support and love from family, friends and even strangers. Trisha credits this support as part of the miracle of her recovery as she relearned how to do simple things, such as rolling over, telling time, buttoning her blouse or identifying simple objects. The support allowed her to move from victim to survivor, reclaim her life and become whole.
Trisha has appeared on numerous television shows including a Katie Couric Special, The Today Show, Dateline NBC, Larry King Live, The CBS Early Show, CNN and Fox News. Today, she speaks to audiences across the globe about her journey to recovery and healing. Her story has encouraged people worldwide to overcome life's obstacles- regardless of what they might be- and get back on the road of life.
Trisha Meili explains, "I am extremely excited about sharing my message of hope and possibility at the 10th Anniversary of Siskin Hospital's Possibilities Luncheon in February! I am eager to let attendees know that whatever the challenge, we can do more than we ever thought possible, especially with the help of an exceptional facility like Siskin Hospital."
The Possibilities Luncheon will also feature personal stories of how patients have overcome their disabilities to achieve incredible accomplishments. There will be a very special patient video with uplifting footage of Siskin Hospital patients who have an amazing recovery story to share. Love, courage and perseverance helped each person turn tragedy into triumph, as they discovered that life is full of possibilities.
A dedicated Steering Committee is working with Siskin Hospital employees to help coordinate the luncheon. Siskin Hospital is very excited to have Barby and Tom Edd Wilson as the 2013 Steering Committee Co-Chairs. The Possibilities Luncheon is Siskin Hospital's only community-wide fundraising event, with proceeds helping to provide needed services for patients without adequate insurance to cover the cost of their care. Siskin Hospital would like to thank Unum for their continued support as the Premier Event Sponsor of the Possibilities Luncheon for ten years, as well the Hamico Foundation (Presenting Speaker Sponsor), the Chattanooga Times Free Press (Principal Press Sponsor) and Brewer Media Group (Primary Broadcast Sponsor) for their supportive sponsorships.
Individual tickets to the event are $75. Platinum sponsorship tables of 8 are available for $2,000, Crystal sponsorship tables of 8 for $1,500 and Patron sponsorship tables of 8 for $1,000. Neuropsychology Refocusing Senior Care
By: John Sewell, East Tennessee Medical News
The ever-increasing population of senior citizens has ushered in a host of new areas of focus for healthcare professionals. When we think of healthcare for seniors, we usually think of maintenance of the physical body, such as the heart, the vertebrae, and digestive organs—all the while glossing over the fact that the brain is in fact the body’s most important organ.
Dr. Christopher Young, Clinical Neuropsychologist for Chattanooga’s Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, is hoping to change that focus. Young explained that dealing with brain disorders is becoming a primary concern for physicians handling senior care. Siskin currently boasts four clinical neuropsychologists on its staff.
“As of 2010, there were around 40 million adults over age 65,” said Young. “And the 85 to 94 year old group is the fastest growing segment of that group because people are living longer. The lifetime incidence of developing dementia for seniors is 15 percent or higher. And after 85, nearly 50 percent of that population has some stage of Alzheimer’s.”
Alzheimer’s disease is the primary neurological challenge for senior citizens, although there is certainly a host of other challenges. For the analysis of disorders of the brain, clinical neuropsychologists are fast becoming the go-to group of diagnostic physicians dealing with neurological health for seniors.
“Clinical neuropsychology is really focused on characterizing the behavioral manifestations of brain dysfunction,” explained Young. “As clinical neuropsychologists, we have developed tools and methods for objectively measuring brain function—that includes memory processing, memory retention, visual processing, problem solving, and certainly the personality itself.
“Memory problems are the most common complaint,” Young continued. “People can have memory problems in a lot of ways. People with Alzheimer’s typically have problems with encoding memories. Other people may also have problems with processing speed or attention. Those factors work in sync because if a person has a hard time paying attention, it’s also hard to remember things.”
Neurological disorders for seniors most often manifest themselves in the form of memory lapses. Young explained that clinical neuropsychologists are in the business of doing detective work to diagnose brain disorders.
“The initial evaluation is multifaceted,” said Young. “Certainly, one of the important pieces for us is to get outside medical records. With aging populations, it’s good to have a family member or close friend along at the evaluation to provide corroboration for self-report. We would try to establish what symptoms a patient might have and the course of those symptoms, what underlying health issues might be relevant, and what medications the patient might be using. We would of course look at any risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea. All those pieces begin to paint a picture of what concerns or changes might apply to the patient. From there, we would usually set up a time to make formal assessments of those abilities.”
Although the bulk of the work done by clinical neuropsychologists is treating disorders after diagnosis, new ways of dealing with brain health proactively are emerging. Dr. Paul Nussbaum, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of the Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is spearheading a hands-on, preemptive approach to brain health.
Nussbaum has mounted an effort to make brain health part of a regimen of lifelong proactive health measures. He explained that a proper approach to brain health should focus on five areas: nutrition, physical activity, mental stimulation, socialization, and spirituality. While Nussbaum is indeed excited about diagnostic developments for clinical neuropsychologists, he stresses that preventative measures should be emphasized as well.
“The tools that we use on the clinical side [of neuropsychology] have become much more sensitive,” said Nussbaum. “The research that neuropsychologists are doing is helping to identify those who are at risk for developing dementia. We’ve been deeply involved in helping with treatments, in terms of understanding functional abilities, and in helping with the basic question of ‘can my parent still live alone?’ These are all areas that neuropsychologists have helped. But I don’t think we’re necessarily doing enough in terms of developing proactive measures for brain health.
“We’ve got to begin the process of brain health promotion really early in life,” Nussbaum continued. “We have to create incentives for people to continue to learn, to eat healthy, and to engage in physical activity.
“The neat thing about brain health is that it’s really not rocket science,” enthused Nussbaum. “It’s really kind of practical stuff. People want to maintain having access to their life story. And these brain diseases—what they fundamentally do—is remove us from our own life stories—from our experiences with our loved ones. We tend to lose our loved ones because we don’t see them as familiar people anymore. We need to promote the understanding of brain health so that we can keep people involved in the story, so to speak.”
Nussbaum recently spoke in Knoxville to 18,000 participants at the 2012 Destination Imagination Conference and is scheduled to speak in the East Tennessee area again when he visits Johnson City on December 7th.

December 3-7, 2012 is The American Occupational Therapy Association's Older Driver Safety Awareness Week
It is a fact of life that people grow older everyday. With increasing age come changes in physical, mental and sensory abilities that can challenge a person's continued ability to drive safely. But there are a variety of safe travel options for people of all ages. The real need is a broader awareness of the solutions, rather than a narrow focus on the problem.
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) believes that occupational therapy practitioners have the skills to evaluate a person's overall ability to operate a vehicle safely and provide rehabilitation, if necessary. Many are specially trained in the full scope of driving rehabilitation. Occupational therapy practitioners work with older adults as well as their families and caregivers, offering individualized assessment. They can identify individuals' unique challenges and find strategies that will help them live life to its fullest by keeping them active, healthy, and safe in their communities.
AOTA's Older Driver Safety Awareness Week (December 3–7, 2012) aims to promote understanding of the importance of mobility and transportation to ensuring older adults remain active in the community—shopping, working or volunteering—with the confidence that transportation will not be the barrier to strand them at home.
Throughout the week, AOTA will bring attention to a different aspect of older driver safety. To learn more, please click here to visit the AOTA website.

Central Park Jogger to Speak for Siskin
by- Joan Garrett, Chattanooga Times Free Press
The famed "Central Park Jogger," who survived a brutal rape and beating in New York City in 1989, will speak to patients at Siskin Hospital in February, and organizers of the event hope her story will be an example of how to overcome tragedy.
Trisha Meili was a 28-year-old investment banker when she was attacked during an evening run. After two men found her in a coma with 80 percent blood loss and a traumatic brain injury, doctors questioned whether she would live. The rape sparked national attention and outrage.
Media outlets referred to her as the "Central Park Jogger" and didn't report her name because she was a victim of sexual assault, but 14 years later she recalled her recovery in a memoir, "I Am the Central Park Jogger."
Since then she has spoken on a Katie Couric special, "The Today Show," "Dateline NBC," "Larry King Live," "The CBS Early Show," CNN and Fox News.
Her appearance will be part of an annual Possibilities Luncheon intended to raise money for patients who don't have insurance, Siskin spokeswoman Lindsay E. Wyatt said. Siskin helps patients rehabilitate from injuries, brain trauma or disabilities.
Over the 10 years of the Possibilities Luncheon, speakers have included Lee Woodruff, the wife of ABC News journalist Bob Woodruff, who survived a brain injury from a roadside bomb in 2005 in Iraq; Bonnie St. John, an amputee who was the first African-American to win medals in the Winter Paralympics as a ski racer; and Roger Crawford, the first person in U.S. history to play a Division I college sport with a severe disability.
"I am eager to let attendees know that whatever the challenge, we can do more than we ever thought possible," Meili said in a statement to the Times Free Press. "As I recovered from a traumatic brain injury with a new body and new mind, I was fortunate to be at a facility just like Siskin Hospital where a dedicated staff worked with me and my family to help me reach my goals and dreams."
The luncheon also will feature videos of Siskin patients who have had miraculous recoveries, said Wyatt.
"Love, courage and perseverance helped each person turn tragedy into triumph, as they discovered that life is full of possibilities," said Wyatt.
Tickets to Possibilities are $75 and can be purchased online (CLICK HERE!) or by calling 423.634.1208. For more information, please click here to visit the Possibilities page.

Regular physical exercise appears to protect the brain from shrinking, an otherwise natural process in old age that is associated with memory and thinking problems.
Conversely, mentally and socially stimulating activities, long believed to stimulate the brain, had no major effect on preventing brain shrinkage, according to a study published today (Oct. 22) in the journal Neurology.
In other words, if you want to maximize the mind-enriching benefits of playing chess, pick a match across town and run or walk vigorously to it.
This relatively large brain-imaging study, which included brain scans using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), involved more than 600 people in Scotland between the ages 70 and 73. The researchers found a strong and direct correlation revealing that as physical exercise increases, brain shrinkage decreases.
"People in their seventies who participated in more physical exercise, including walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those who were less physically active," said lead author Alan J. Gow of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. "On the other hand, our study showed no real benefit to participating in mentally and socially stimulating activities on brain size, as seen on MRI scans, over the three-year time frame."
The research tapped into a respected longitudinal aging study called the Lothian Birth Cohort Study 1936, which, in 1947, tested the intelligence of more than 1,000 children born in 1936 and then has followed up with periodic assessments. This latest analysis entailed a health survey conducted when 638 subjects were 70 and then an MRI scan when they were 73.
The subjects provided details of their daily activities - from moving to do only basic chores, to keeping fit with heavy exercise or competitive sports - as well as non-physical social and leisure endeavors. Those most devoted to exercise showed both better brain circuitry connections and less brain shrinkage compared with the least-active subjects. This was regardless of initial IQ or social class status.
There was, however, "no support for a beneficial effect of more intellectually challenging or socially orientated activities," the researchers wrote, at least in terms of warding off brain shrinkage.
Gow said his group hasn't established a biological reason for why exercise can give the brain such a physical workout. Nor could they rule out the possibility that a healthy brain enables those elderly subjects to exercise more, and not that exercise maintains the brain.
"To be definitive, we do of course need more large-scale trials examining the effects of physical activity interventions," to determine which factors determine what, Gow told LiveScience. "We are following up the same individuals [for] repeat lifestyle assessments and brain scans, which will allow us to examine the direction of the associations in more detail."
Nevertheless, both physical exercise and non-physical leisure and social pursuits have so many other benefits - for the former, preventing chronic diseases ; for the latter, combating depression and fatigue - that there's no harm in pursuing both at any age.

September 22 is National Fall Prevention Day!!
FALLS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF INJURY and accidental death in adults over the age of 65. Clutter and other tripping hazards, poor balance, and distractions can all cause a person to stumble and fall. Some people become so afraid of falling (or after an actual fall) that they stop doing activities they used to enjoy. An occupational therapy practitioner uses your daily activities as the basis of therapy to help ensure that you can safely do the things you want and need to do. The following tips were shared by occupational therapy practitioners to help older adults reduce their risk of falls.
Remove clutter in your home, and walk carefully when there are potential hazards, such as throw rugs and pets underfoot. Suggest furniture arrangement that provides plenty of room to walk freely. If you hold onto furniture for balance, he or she will advise whether it is heavy enough to do that safely or suggest alternatives. Recommend removing throw rugs or securing them firmly to the floor. Never stand on chairs or similar items to get to something you can't reach. Ask for help, or use a sturdy stool with hand rail or a ladder. Review your entire home and be sure you can safely and easily get to the items you use on a regular basis. Help create a plan for accessing things that are used most frequently, as well as those stored in hard-to-reach places (e.g., seasonal items, special china, etc.). Do not use towel bars, sink edges, etc. for support because they could come away from the wall. Recommend installing railings and grab bars throughout your home in locations that are appropriate for you. Recommend putting nonslip strips or a rubber mat on the floor of the tub or shower to prevent slipping. Use a nightlight in the bedroom and bathroom. Use a nightlight in the bedroom and bathroom. Evaluate the lighting throughout your home. Suggest adding lighting to potentially unsafe areas (e.g., basement stairs) or routine work areas and be sure all the lighting provides good illumination while reducing glare. Immediately wipe spills off the floor, and use a rubber- backed bathmat to prevent the bathroom floor from getting wet. Even a small amount of water can lead to a slip. Ensure that you can safely bend to clean up spills or show you adapted ways to do so. Recommend a bathmat that will not be a tripping hazard. Stay active to maintain overall strength, endurance, and balance. Safely increase your physical conditioning by focusing on items you enjoy (e.g., gardening or washing the car to increase strength, walking to increase endurance, carrying shopping bags to increase balance). Know your limitations. If there is a task you cannot easily complete, do not risk a fall by trying to do it. Recommend ways to safely continue to do the things you enjoy based on your individual skills and needs.

Siskin Hospital's SubAcute Rehabilitation Program
Recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 2012 Best Nursing Homes
Chattanooga, TN-Siskin Hospital's SubAcute Rehabilitation Program has received a high ranking of Five-Stars Overall in U.S. News and World Report's annual Best Nursing Homes. These scores are based on Nursing Home Compare, a consumer website run by the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) in the following three categories: Health Inspections, Nurse Staffing, and Quality of Care. Siskin Hospital's program is the only licensed nursing facility in the Chattanooga area to currently have earned the highest overall rating.
The SubAcute Program at Siskin Hospital is designed for patients who do not require a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program. SubAcute patients receive inpatient medical and nursing care, as well as an interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation program at a less intense level. Participants in the program stay an average of 12 days, and most are recovering from an orthopedic surgery or injury, a mild stroke or mild neurological disorder, or extended hospitalization that has left them weakened.
U.S. News' Best Nursing Homes recognizes top-rated facilities in all 50 states and offers important guidance to families and healthcare providers caring for people in need of a skilled nursing program. The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created by CMS to provide a way for consumers, families and caregivers to compare nursing facilities and identify areas of potential concern in individual nursing facilities. Ratings can be accessed on the Internet at www.medicare.gov/NHCompare.
For the second year in a row, Siskin Hospital's SubAcute Rehabilitation Program has been named in the U.S. News and World Report's Top 100 skilled nursing programs.
"Our goal is to provide high-quality care with excellent outcomes that will return our patients to their homes. In the last fiscal year more than 90 percent of our patients were discharged to their homes. This is a true testament to our staff's dedication to meeting our goal," Diana Miller, Administrator, SubAcute Services, stated.
The SubAcute Program at Siskin Hospital focuses on short rehabilitation stays for patients. SubAcute has higher staffing requirements than many nursing facilities, making the patient's rehabilitation care the main focus.
"Our not-for-profit status allows us to focus totally on the needs of the patients we serve. We are pleased that our scores and outcomes reflect this," Miller explained.
"We continuously aim to meet state and federal guidelines, and are privileged to serve a niche group of individuals who are not in need of comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation, but who are also not appropriate for long-term placement. Seeing our patients get back to independent living is incredibly rewarding and we will continue to make that our main focus," Miller continued.
Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation is dedicated exclusively to physical rehabilitation and offers specialized treatment programs in brain injury, amputation, stroke, spinal cord injury, orthopedics and major multiple trauma. The Hospital also provides treatment for neurological disorders and loss of muscle strength and control following illness or surgery. Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation is pleased to announce new treatment options with Saebo rehabilitation products are now available. A free Saebo Screening for those who have suffered a loss of movement in their hands or arms will be held on Tuesday, March 13th at 1:00 p.m. at Siskin Hospital.
The Saebo Treatment Program is a new technology for Siskin Hospital therapists to use with patients in the Chattanooga area. Saebo is a neuro-rehabilitation company with orthotic products that offer hope to individuals who have a loss of movement in their hands or arms due to stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions that result in decreased hand and arm function.
The Saebo products give patients the potential to regain movement in their arms and hands, even if the injury was several years ago. Occupational Therapists designed the treatment devices in order to help those with little hand function and limited arm movement. The Saebo devices are reimbursed by Medicare and many private insurance companies.
The free Saebo Screening will provide one-on-one evaluations with Saebo-trained Occupational Therapists at Siskin Hospital that will help determine individual needs with Saebo devices. Therapists will do personalized fittings and explore therapeutic techniques that can help begin incorporating new hand functionality in therapy, as well as home life. A Saebo representative will also be in attendance to answer any additional questions about orthotic devices and the treatment program.
For more information or to register for the free Saebo Screening at Siskin Hospital, please contact Amy Burba at 423.634.1385 or aburba@siskinrehab.org. Please visit www.SiskinRehab.org for additional information. Participants must register by March 9th and the Saebo Screening will be held in the Siskin Hospital Outpatient Conference Room from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13th.

He is the founder of The One Revolution Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at gaining equality for people with disabilities. One Revolution strives to change public perception of people with disabilities, as well as offer the gift of mobility by donating wheelchairs and hand cycles to people in developing countries. In addition to his work with the Paralympics and in International Paralympic Committee, Waddell has found success as a motivational speaker. Waddell speaks to the resilience of the human condition, with topics ranging from leadership to adversity to quality of life.
The Possibilities Luncheon will also feature personal accounts of how individuals have overcome their disabilities to achieve amazing accomplishments. There will be a very special patient video with heartwarming footage of Siskin Hospital patients who have a miraculous recovery story to share. Love, courage, and perseverance helped each person turn tragedy into triumph, as they discovered that life is full of possibilities.

A Happy Heart is a Thankful Heart!Every day at Siskin Hospital, our caring staff appreciates the “little things” in life…things that are often taken for granted with our busy and full schedules. Being able to stand up, get dressed, brush your teeth, walk or even run are things many of us don't even think about. These “little things” become some of the most celebrated and appreciated accomplishments for our patients who have recently experienced a life changing illness or accident.
This Thanksgiving, please join us in reflecting on all of the “little things” that are really huge blessings. Having a happy and thankful heart can come easier to those who have just taken their first steps again or who have seen their loved ones do more than ever expected, slowly gaining back their lives. Pause for a moment and truly think about all that you have to be thankful for….especially the “little things” this Thanksgiving that make for having a happy heart full of gratitude, love and joy. |

That program opened the window to how involved, dedicated and patient brain injury therapists have to be. The road back from an injury to the brain is long, repetitive and filled with disappointments.
Rachel Halter is an occupational therapist and is also a certified brain injury specialist. She works at Siskin Hospital. Halter said the process of rebuilding everyday basics requires patience and tremendous input from a patient's family....

Chattanooga, TN- Rachel Halter, CBIS, Occupational Therapist at Siskin Hospital, spoke on October 7th at the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association (TNOTA) Annual Conference in Nashville on the topic of de-escalating agitated brain injury patients.
TNOTA's Annual Conference gathers over 100 Occupational Therapists throughout the state to provide continuing education and discussion opportunities. Halter presented to over 70 therapists and discussed a variety of de-escalating techniques that encourage an overall understanding of the person's behavior and explain how to observe, interpret and predict their behavioral outcomes. She also discussed that intervention can help when dealing with a crisis management situation. Halter explained some general techniques that encourage the responder to stay calm, practice active listening, orientate a patient's surroundings, set limits for the patient and redirect attention to help decrease overall agitation for patients who have sustained a brain injury.
In addition to speaking at the TNOTA Conference, Halter is currently the region's only Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). She earned the voluntary certification from the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists by passing their challenging exam in May 2011. The CBIS certification allows Halter to continue expanding her knowledge of treatment options and issues concerning brain injuries.
"Rachel's enthusiasm for and expertise with the treatment of brain injuries makes her a valuable resource for our staff, patients and their caregivers," Amy Burba, OTR/L, Occupational Therapy Supervisor at Siskin Hospital, stated.
She now provides patients with a more advanced knowledge of brain injury treatments, while also serving patients, their families and the staff at Siskin Hospital as a valuable liaison to the national brain injury treatment community. Halter explains, "Earning the CBIS certification demonstrates that Siskin Hospital is committed to advancing individuals to provide the highest quality of knowledge and treatment for our patients."
Halter has earned her Bachelors and Masters in Science of Occupational Therapy from Brenau University. She has been employed with Siskin Hospital for seven years, where she continues her involvement with the Chattanooga Brain Injury Association (CABIA) for the last five years.
CABIA is a non-profit organization housed within Siskin Hospital that provides educational and community resources for brain injury patients and their families. Halter currently serves as the 1st Vice President and continues to serve on the Board of Directors, as she has done for the last four years. Halter previously held the 2nd Vice President and Secretary Positions for CABIA.

In addition to nontraumatic brain injuries caused by aneurysms and strokes, there are approximately 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries in the United States that contribute to one-third of injury-related deaths each year. All injuries generate a unique set of effects felt in each system of the body; therefore, all injuries require individualized treatment, much like the specialized treatment provided at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation.

The 21st Annual Siskin Hospital Golf Classic will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at Council Fire Golf Course.

Siskin Hospital's Robert P. Main Named
Chattanooga Area Manager of the Year
Chattanooga, TN- Robert P. Main, President and Chief Executive Officer of Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, is the recipient of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce's Chattanooga Area Manager of the Year Award for 2011.
The Manager of the Year Award is made annually by member organizations of Chattanooga Area Manager of the Year (CAMOY). Now in its 24th year, the award recognizes an executive manager who has made a significant contribution to the Hamilton County area.
Robert Main is serving in his 23rd year as President and Chief Executive Officer of Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation. He was instrumental in the development of the hospital and officially became the first employee in 1987. He has remained steadfast in his leadership for the past 23 years, providing paramount insight and direction in establishing Siskin Hospital's presence as one of the most successful regional rehabilitation hospitals in the country. Mr. Main remains the longest tenured healthcare Chief Executive Officer in the Chattanooga area.
The Chattanooga community has directly benefited from Mr. Main's vision of providing specialized programs such as the Brain Injury Unit, the Lymphedema program, the Balance and Dizziness program, and the Driving Evaluation program. These programs provide the Chattanooga community with localized specialty care that would otherwise be unavailable in this area. Mr. Main and his team continue to search for new ways to better serve patients with special needs.
As a way to continue serving the disabled population, Mr. Main has worked diligently with staff to develop the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital. The focus of the Fitness Center is to provide a place where disabled and able-bodied people, whether former patients or not, can exercise side-by-side with the benefit of using specially designed equipment developed to accommodate their needs. The Chattanooga community directly benefits from the Fitness Center, since it is the only full-service adaptive exercise facility in the region.
Mr. Main is an active member of the boards of directors of United Way, Blood Assurance, Hospice of Chattanooga, and The Jordan Thomas Foundation. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, and a past board member of the Chamber of Commerce and Notre Dame High School. In his professional life, he has served as Chairman of the Chattanooga Area Hospital District. He has also served as Chairman and is currently a board member for the Tennessee Hospital Association.
Mr. Main is past Chairman and a member of the American Hospital Association Governing Council for Rehabilitation, and is the past Chairman and current board member of the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association. He also serves on the Regional Policy Board of the American Hospital Association. He was the founding Chairman of the Southeast Rehabilitation Network. Mr. Main is a past member of the Professional and Technical Advisory Committee of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, as well as continuing to chair a number of other committees and task forces on a national level.
Robert Main's community service also includes past board membership on the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association and membership on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chancellor's Roundtable.
Locally, Mr. Main's leadership was essential in enhancing the field of rehabilitation education. Under his direction, Siskin Hospital joined in a three-way partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to offer a Master's Degree program in Occupational Therapy on the UTC campus.
Mr. Main has also been very active on a state and federal level with lobbying efforts for the disabled to ensure their access to rehabilitation care. On a federal level, Mr. Main was a founding member of the FAIR Fund, a common legal fund formed to preserve access to inpatient rehabilitation care. The members of the FAIR Fund pursue test cases across the country challenging inappropriate medical necessity denials of Medicare/Medicaid.
In his professional and personal life, Robert Main values and rewards hard work, encouraging growth and promotion within his organization. He worked his way through his own schooling to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and a Masters of the Arts in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Iowa. He has a special fondness for those who are willing to work hard and have the motivation to excel in their field. He is a great teacher and mentor, as witnessed by a large number of Siskin Hospital's staff members who were recently honored for their longstanding employment terms ranging from five to 20-plus years.
Siskin Hospital is the only freestanding, not-for-profit rehabilitation hospital in Tennessee, employing nearly 400 people. Mr. Main's primary objective for Siskin Hospital is to provide services that will enable patients to return to an active lifestyle within the community. For many Siskin Hospital patients, this includes returning to work and volunteer activities, allowing them to discontinue disability benefits, and ultimately saving taxpayer dollars.

Bonnie St. John to Speak at 8th Annual Possibilities Luncheon
Benefiting Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation Patients
Chattanooga, TN-Siskin Hospital is proud to announce that Bonnie St. John will be the guest speaker at the 8th Annual "Possibilities: Siskin Hospital Celebrates Life Beyond Disability" Luncheon on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. The Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
As an amputee, Olympic skier, Rhodes Scholar, former White House official, successful businesswoman and author, Bonnie St. John knows a little something about overcoming challenges. She has relentlessly sought ways to stay positive and live joyfully no matter what life dishes out. Her deep sense of peace and joy in life has inspired millions of people to seek what she has learned about finding joy in a crazy world.
After having her leg amputated at age 5, Bonnie overcame a mountain of obstacles. Her determination and winning spirit led her to Innsbruck, Austria, where she won Silver and Bronze medals as a ski racer in the 1984 Paralympics. Bonnie also graduated with honors from Harvard University and won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. She was later appointed to the White House National Economic Council and has worked tirelessly as a disability advocate.
She has been featured on The Today Show, Montel Williams, CNN, Good Morning America, as well as People Magazine, The New York Times, Essence, and many others. Bonnie is a critically acclaimed author and is one of the most highly sought after keynote speakers in the country. Her message of falling down and getting up-in life, at an Olympic ski race, or in business-has been sought after by CEOs, recognized in the White House, celebrated on a Starbucks Cup, and honored with a doctoral degree for her lifetime commitment to motivating people.
Bonnie's philosophy is that, "Everyone has the God-given capacity to live joyfully-it doesn't depend on your circumstances. But it does require that you make the choice to identify your joys in life and take action to reach them."

Story by LaTrice Currie
Eyewitness News Anchor
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- Botox injections have become common for giving women and men a better shot a the fountain of youth.
But for Bethany Goode, after suffering two separate traumatic injuries. the first from a car accident, and the other from domestic violence, botox is giving her a better shot a regaining her independence.
"They've made a tremendous difference. Before, when I walked, they were crossing over," says Bethany Goode.
Dr. David Bowers is the medical director at Siskin Hospital.
"The muscles are very stiff, tight, they draw and you can't relax them to open the hand in Bethany's case she has a hard time opening these fingers, particularly these three fingers," says Dr. Bowers.
Bethany's condition is known as spasticity or movement disorders caused by traumatic injuries.
"So when we do the botox it allows the muscles to relax, and she can open her hand more easily," says Dr. Bowers.
The road to recovery and re-gaining some of her independence has been long and difficult for Bethany, lots of botox injections on a regular basis, but she says it has been well worth every shot.
"Since I have been getting them its loosened me up so I can do my activities of daily living more easily and normally," says Goode.
Allowing her to do more of the things that matter most.
"I'm just able to live life and care for my kids easier and just everything," says Goode.
Bethany gets the botox injections every three months and while this has proven effective for patients suffering from traumatic injuries, Dr. Bowers says if a person is suffering from severe contractures, surgery is their best option.

Siskin Hospital's SubAcute Rehabilitation Program
Earns Consecutive Five-Star Quality Ratings
Chattanooga, TN-Siskin Hospital's SubAcute Rehabilitation Program has recently earned consecutive Five-Star Quality Ratings in Nursing Home Compare. These scores are assigned by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) in the following three categories: Health Inspections, Nursing Home Staffing, and Quality Measures. The SubAcute Program is the only nursing facility in Tennessee to receive the highest score of Five Stars in each of the three categories for the most recent two periods.
The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created by CMS to provide a way for consumers, families, and caregivers to compare nursing facilities and identify areas of potential concern in individual nursing facilities. Ratings can be accessed on the Internet at www.medicare.gov/NHCompare.
Chattanooga, TN-- Carlos Thompson, a Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, was recently voted the Clinical Instructor of the Year by the Chattanooga State Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Program.
On May 6, a Clinical Instructor Luncheon was held at the new Health Science Center on the Chattanooga State campus. Cindy Birchell, Academic Coordinator of Clinical Instruction, presented the Clinical Instructor of the Year award to Thompson, who is a graduate of the PTA program at Chattanooga State Community College.
Determination of this award is by nomination from students, academic clinical faculty, and the Association of Community and Continuing Education. Recognition is given to a Clinical Instructor who had demonstrated exceptional efforts on behalf of clinical education with Chattanooga State students during the previous year. The award recipient must have consistent positive comments by students over the past year, faculty recommendation, clinical observations by academic faculty when visiting students in a clinical setting, Clinical Instructor participation in thorough completion of student assessments, and Clinical Instructor frequency of providing student supervision.
"Carlos has been a faithful Clinical Instructor for many years. Having been an excellent student and graduate from our PTA program, he is very aware of the need for quality Clinical Instructors to help students apply skills they have learned in the classroom/laboratory and to learn new innovative techniques," Laura Warren, PT, MS, Associate Professor and PTA Program Director at Chattanooga State, said.
Thompson has worked at Siskin Hospital since 1990, and was able to complete his degree from Chattanooga State while working full time and raising a family. Thompson's passion for excellence in physical therapy and instruction provides students with the opportunity to excel in their education and establish necessary skills for quality patient care. Students commented at the Clinical Instructor Luncheon that Thompson is a great teacher who has a gentle way of correcting mistakes while learning.
"While being a Clinical Instructor does provide contact hours for continuing competency, which is a state requirement for re-licensure, Carlos takes his professional responsibility very seriously. We appreciate Siskin Hospital's historically strong support of our students through clinical education," Warren stated.
"Siskin Hospital has a good working partnership with Chattanooga State. Most of our PTAs are graduates of Chattanooga State. The success we jointly share with them is due to the professionalism of Carlos and the other PTAs who participate as Clinical Instructors, because they believe in what they do and do it well," Aileen San Luis, Siskin Hospital Inpatient Physical Therapy Supervisor, stated.
Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation is dedicated exclusively to physical rehabilitation and offers specialized treatment programs in brain injury, amputation, stroke, spinal cord injury, orthopedics and major multiple trauma. President and CEO, Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation
Chattanooga, TN-- Thousands of McKesson Provider Technologies customers gather annually at the National McKesson User Conference to collaborate and share ideas to help maximize healthcare technology solutions. Siskin Hospital sent employees to not only take place in the various workshops and seminars, but also to present abstracts to those attending the conference in Orlando, Florida.
McKesson Provider Technologies is the oldest and largest healthcare service IT company, dedicated to delivering comprehensive solutions with the power to make a difference in how healthcare is provided.
Siskin Hospital has been a McKesson Provider Technologies customer since December 2005. As a developing partner for the Paragon product, Siskin Hospital has helped add two new applications and enhance four existing applications, enabling the product to function well for patient care, as well as for other similar freestanding medical facilities.
"Our goal for deploying an electronic medical record could be summarized into one word: communication," Scarlet Farr, Director of Information Systems at Siskin Hospital explained.
Farr elaborated to say, "We needed better ways to communicate our patients' progress and the results of patient interventions more efficiently to a variety of clinical and financial providers. We have worked diligently with McKesson to improve our clinical communication at Siskin Hospital."
The McKesson Insight Board, composed of active end-user advocacy group members, accepted three of Siskin Hospital's abstracts for presentation at the September 2009 National McKesson User Conference. Kara Spearman Burton, SLP CCC, and Amy Burba, OTR, presented a forum called, "Rehabilitating the Care Plan," which explained how technology services can provide a means to share experiences of creating a multidisciplinary care plan in a physical rehabilitation facility.
Farr, along with Lori Beeby of McCook Regional Hospital, presented a session titled, "Solving Business Needs with Forms Web Stations." Farr also presented "CareStation: A Tool for Rehab," which discussed the McKesson Paragon CareStation's development process at Siskin Hospital. The Paragon CareStation now enables better service solutions for the unique needs of rehabilitation facilities.
Siskin Hospital believes that quality rehabilitation is centered around a skilled team of providers committed to working with the patient's family and their caregivers. "Having paper charts in the possession of one clinician can make it difficult for others involved in care to have access to important medical information. With electronic tools, several individuals can view the information at the same time. We have added real-time update features and online analysis reports to our portable web stations located throughout the hospital to further increase the value of electronic medical records," Farr explained.
Because a patient's functional improvement does not stop with his or her care at Siskin Hospital, the ability to provide quality documentation to third parties is vital. Having an electronic solution enables staff to provide quick and legible documentation, keeping medical costs down and ensuring the continuum of care is fluid for the patient. The final medical record is a product of both direct data entry and image storage.
"McKesson's solution enables us to establish workflow processing on images being stored. Instead of waiting for a document to be routed, a scanned or cold-fed image can produce triggers to multiple people, enabling healthcare providers to work more efficiently," Farr stated.
Siskin Hospital has also been able to drastically improve patient satisfaction with food service by creating electronic menu printing solutions with McKesson's Forms Web Station. Using this feature has reduced the time it takes to submit appropriate menu options for a patient's therapeutic dining program menu, as well as communicate their preference into a quality food tray.
Farr explained that, "Siskin Hospital has more than 200 menus in our Forms Web Station, which represents nine primary diets that are rotated over a 21-day menu cycle. We have cut costs by not purchasing pre-printed menus that previously prevented us from making flexible menu modifications. We have reduced the number of labels being used in the patient food tray process by printing patient data directly to the menu, requiring only snack labels to be printed."
"Being able to improve our communication with technology not only benefits the patients and clinicians at Siskin Hospital, but also benefits the medical community as a whole. We look forward to actively working with McKesson to further develop healthcare IT solutions," Farr explained.
Alabama Alumni Association Provides
Siskin Hospital Patient with Football Tickets
Chattanooga, TN-The Chattanooga Chapter of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association recently presented Siskin Hospital patient Joel Fraker with a complimentary pair of Alabama football tickets.
Butch Cox, President of the Alabama Alumni Association's Chattanooga Chapter, along with Past-President, Ron McKelvy, and President-Elect, Christina Cox, presented Joel with the tickets on his 39th Birthday at Siskin Hospital's Outpatient Pavilion.
Joel and his son, Jake, will be attending the September 19th game in Tuscaloosa when the Crimson Tide play against North Texas. Each year, the President of the Alabama Alumni Association's Chattanooga Chapter has the opportunity to present tickets to a special individual. After hearing his story, Butch chose Joel as the 2009 recipient.
Joel suffered a spinal cord injury on September 2, 2007 after a fall from his dirt bike, paralyzing him from the waist down. After multiple surgeries, Joel has worked tirelessly in his rehabilitation efforts to regain the ability to walk. Joel's primary Physical Therapist, Noi Mavredes, works with Joel weekly at Siskin Hospital's Outpatient Pavilion to help increase his strength, balance, movement and endurance.
"Since Joel was 6 months out from his spinal cord injury when he came to Siskin Hospital, he has really had to work extra hard to regain movement," said John Jordi, Physical Therapy Assistant. "In the year that we have worked with Joel, he has made huge strides in his ability to regain movement. While he is still in a wheelchair, he has already been able to walk 350 feet with assistance in therapy. He serves as an inspiration to the other spinal cord patients," John said.
Joel is part of the Project Walk Program, where therapists, such as Noi, have completed extensive training and certification on spinal cord injury treatment to ensure a patient's recovery is maximized. Joel and Noi even traveled to the Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center in Carlsbad, California to ensure the therapy he receives will give him the best opportunity to make a recovery. "He has come so far in his ability to walk. We are going to keep working and do everything possible to help him regain movement. I am very proud of him and all that he has accomplished," Noi explained.
As a lifelong Crimson Tide fan, Joel is looking forward to sharing this special day with his 14-year-old son. Jake is a freshman at Franklin County High School and is enjoying his first year as a member of the high school football team. "This will no doubt be a great experience for them! They are so excited and thankful for the opportunity the Alabama Alumni Association has provided... Roll Tide," Noi exclaimed!

Siskin Hospital Rebounders Wheelchair Basketball Team
Chattanooga, TN—Join us on Tuesday, January 27th at 8:00 p.m. at Boyd-Buchanan High School’s home basketball game to honor two Siskin Hospital Rebounders Wheelchair Basketball players.
The Rebounders will be performing a half-time exhibition during the Boys Varsity basketball game versus Tyner High School. In addition to the exhibition, two of the Rebounders players will be honored for all they have achieved as disabled individuals.
Derrick Holder (#22) was the first student using a wheelchair to graduate from Boyd-Buchanan in 1991, and has been a member of the Rebounders since the team was formed. Brian Penny (#45) will also be honored. Penny is a senior at Boyd-Buchanan and will graduate this spring. He has recently joined the Rebounders team and has been a tremendous example of pursuing life to it’s fullest by educating others about the different opportunities that are available for disabled athletes.

Since 1999, Siskin Hospital has sponsored the Rebounders, a team in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) that has been burning wheels and setting records for almost ten years. The Rebounders won the Division III National Championship in 2005.
Siskin Hospital and Boyd-Buchanan School are both hoping to increase student awareness of some of the challenges and accomplishments people with disabilities experience. The Rebounders instill confidence and a sense of camaraderie in its players and continue to expand ideas of what it means to be a disabled athlete. This fast paced, competitive game, compiled with talented athletes, is an example that there is a fun way to get exercise regardless of a disability. This competitive spirit and willingness to make the best of any situation exemplifies the players’ character.
Ranging in age from teenagers to adults in their 60’s, the Rebounders team practices weekly and travels from October to March competing in tournaments nationwide. The Rebounders are a team open to players with all degrees of physical disability. The rules and levels of physical contact are just like able-bodied college basketball. The only exception is that the chair is part of the players’ body, performing quick moves, sprints, pivots, and body-bumping picks required by the sport.
The Rebounders uniforms, travel expenses, transportation, and equipment are sponsored by Siskin Hospital. Each year Siskin Hospital employees volunteer at the Rebounders home tournament to assist in a successful event for teams visiting from other states.
The Rebounders recently competed in a National Wheelchair Basketball Association tournament in Newport News, VA, where they placed 3rd out of 8 teams. The team will be traveling to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta on January 31 and to the Bluegrass Invitational in Lexington, KY from February 6-8. The Rebounders will also be hosting a home tournament in Chattanooga from February 28- March 1.
“If you’ve never watched a wheelchair basketball game, you don’t know what you’ve been missing! There is unbelievable talent on the floor and the Wheelchair Basketball games are a fun experience for everyone. Wheelchair Basketball is a wonderful way for individuals with a disability to have fun competing in an athletic event and build camaraderie with others. We are very appreciative of the opportunity Boyd-Buchanan has provided for us to honor Derrick and Brian for their achievements,” said Lisa Morgan, Department Coordinator for Recreational Therapy at Siskin Hospital.
For more information on the Rebounders team or on the Exhibition Game at Boyd Buchanan School on January 27, please call Lisa Morgan, Department Coordinator for Recreational Therapy at Siskin Hospital at 634-1674 or visit www.SiskinRehab.org.

Siskin Hospital Therapist is Recipient of Outstanding
Professional Award at the National American
Therapeutic Recreation Association Conference
_________________________________________________________
Chattanooga, TN-- Lisa Morgan, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor at Siskin Hospital, was recently presented with the Outstanding Professional Award at the National American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) Conference.
Morgan received the award in honor of her exceptional achievements that have directly benefited the Recreational Therapy profession. She is the Co-Chair of the Federal Public Policy Team and has continuously worked with Recreational Therapy professionals, as well as with the U.S. Senators and House of Representatives regarding the Recreational Therapy field.
According to the ATRA, Recreational Therapists utilize a wide range of activity and community-based interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and leisure needs of their clients. Recreational Therapists assist clients to develop skills, knowledge and behaviors for daily living and community involvement. The therapist works with the client and their family to incorporate specific interests and community resources into therapy, in order to achieve optimal outcomes that transfer to their real life situation.
"As the Recreation Therapy Supervisor at Siskin Hospital, I feel as though I have been given an opportunity to reach our patients in a positive way. I am always looking for a new, fun way to provide therapeutic activities to the patients, which can be very beneficial when used along with traditional therapy methods. I love having the opportunity to educate our patients and their families, along with the community about opportunities that are available to individuals with a disability," Morgan stated.
Morgan's dedication to excellence has consistently benefited the patients at Siskin Hospital. Morgan finds creative ways for patients to enjoy their therapy with a variety of recreational activities. She helps coordinate the Pet Therapy program, as well as the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera performances at the hospital. She started a Garden Club for former and current patients to give them additional opportunities to be outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery at the hospital's Leisure Park. Morgan also arranged for election officials to bring voting ballots to patients that were in the hospital on Election Day, ensuring they were given the opportunity to vote.
Morgan also manages the Siskin Hospital "Rebounders," a national wheelchair basketball team sponsored by the hospital. She helped develop and organize the Siskin Hospital Adaptive Sports program, which is designed to give individuals with a disability an opportunity to learn or re-learn how to play golf and other sports by using high tech equipment in the hospital's Adaptive Sports Center room. Morgan also volunteers with other Siskin Hospital employees at the Hosanna Community, where she helps residents prepare meals and learn valuable life skills.
"It is very important to me that individuals with a disability have the opportunity to be as active and independent as possible. These individuals deserve to have opportunities that will allow them to enjoy life as much as possible by doing things they want to do," Morgan said.
Siskin Hospital is proud to offer the Recreational Therapy program. This program is not covered by insurance and the hospital is not reimbursed for this service. Knowing the positive impact the program has on Siskin Hospital patients, it has become a vital part of providing encouragement and additional opportunities to individuals with a disability. Siskin Hospital's mission is to provide a high quality physical rehabilitation services continuum, where positive outcomes are achieved in a manner that ensures ongoing benefits to the individual served, as well as the community at large.
For more information on Siskin Hospital's Recreational Therapy program, please call 634-1674.
Chattanooga, TN—Like many caring people in the Chattanooga community, Siskin Hospital joins in the sharing and giving of holiday cheer this season by providing numerous holiday activities for patients and employees.
Employees have volunteered to purchase Christmas gifts as part of the Santa for All Seasons program, which supplies Christmas gifts to foster children in Chattanooga. Even though economic times are tough, several Siskin Hospital employees agreed it was necessary to adopt the children’s Christmas Wish Lists and provide them with a variety of clothing, shoes, toys, and other holiday items to help ensure they enjoy the holiday season.
On Friday, December 12, the Brainerd High School Choir will be singing holiday carols for the patients from 11:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Inpatient Therapy Gym.
“We are so thankful to have Charles Collins, Choral Instructor, bring his students to the hospital. The patients love having the choir here and they are so talented! We are very thankful to the Brainerd High School Choir for donating their time and talent to help brighten a patient’s day with beautiful holiday music,” Lisa Morgan, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor at Siskin Hospital, said.
A talented group of Station House singers will also be at Siskin Hospital on Tuesday, December 16th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the employee Holiday Party. The Holiday Party is a time for all employees in the hospital to gather for some holiday fun. The hospital’s Leadership Team will be serving the employees their holiday meal. Later that evening, a local Girl Scout group will also be at the hospital caroling for the patients.
On Thursday, December 18, the Siskin Hospital Stroke Support Group will be traveling around the hospital singing carols and passing out holiday cards to brighten the patients’ day. Tonya Ware, Siskin Hospital CNA, will be joining her church choir on Sunday, December 21 to sing holiday carols to patients in the SubAcute Unit at Siskin Hospital.
The Pet Therapy volunteers will also be making their rounds, wagging their tails throughout the hospital on their scheduled visits. Pet Therapy animals are able to provide patients with unconditional love and acceptance. Siskin Hospital is so grateful to the volunteers who consistently devote time and attention to patients in need. The Christmas tree at the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital proudly displays hand-made ornaments with pictures of the Pet Therapy pets and their owners. This is just one more way these adorable animals spread cheer at Siskin Hospital.
“It’s important for us to try to make the holiday season as special as it can be for our patients. It can be very hard to be in the hospital, away from your family, church and holiday activities. So, we feel very blessed to have the community’s support in providing our patients with several holiday activities that will hopefully lift their spirits and provide holiday cheer,” Morgan stated.
Siskin Hospital is a non-profit organization, with a mission to provide a high quality physical rehabilitation continuum, where positive outcomes are achieved in a manner that ensures ongoing benefits to the individual served, as well as the community at large. Scott Burrows to Speak at 6th Annual Possibilities Luncheon
Chattanooga, TN- Siskin Hospital is proud to announce that Scott Burrows will be the guest speaker for the 6th Annual "Possibilities: Siskin Hospital Celebrates Life Beyond Disability" Luncheon on Wednesday, February 25, 2009. The Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
At the age of 19, Scott Burrows was living his dream of playing football for Bobby Bowden at Florida State University. He was also ranked number one in the state of Florida's Light-Heavy Weight Kick Boxing Division, when tragedy struck...
A single car accident left Scott paralyzed from the chest down, classifying him as a quadriplegic and instantly changing his life. Scott's life had taken an unforeseen turn and his dreams were shattered, as this multi-talented athlete was now confined to a wheelchair.
While in recovery, Scott realized he had two choices in life: he could take control of his life or let life take control of him. From that moment forward, he determined that his disability would not define him. Rather than being sidelined in the game of life, he worked hard to accomplish his goals.
Scott now uses his own success formula of Vision, Mindset and Grit to maximize untapped potential and excel in any challenge he faces. He is an international business owner, wheelchair athlete, author, and renowned professional and motivational speaker. He challenges himself with golf, full-contact wheelchair rugby, wheelchair marathons, skiing, scuba diving, and parasailing. The fear of being a quadriplegic could have ended his dreams, but Scott refused to be sidelined and decided instead to Play Up the Possibilities!
The Possibilities Luncheon will feature personal accounts of how individuals have overcome their disabilities to accomplish amazing things. There will be a very special patient video with heartwarming footage of Siskin Hospital patients who have a miraculous recovery story to share. Love, courage, and perseverance helped each person turn tragedy into triumph, as they discovered that life is full of possibilities.
A dedicated Steering Committee is working with Siskin Hospital employees to help coordinate the luncheon. Siskin Hospital is very excited to have Michael and Paige Mathis as the 2009 Steering Committee Co-Chairs. The Possibilities Luncheon is Siskin Hospital's largest community-wide fundraising event, with proceeds helping to provide needed services for patients without adequate insurance to cover the cost of their care. Siskin Hospital would like to thank Unum for their continued support as the Primary Sponsor of the Possibilities Luncheon for six years.
Individual tickets to the event are $65. Patron and Crystal Sponsorship Tables of 8 are available for $1,000 and $1,500. This year, Siskin Hospital is happy to provide new sponsorship levels, which include a Feature Patient Honoree Table of 8 for $5,000, as well as a Former Patient Honorary or Memorial Table of 8 for $2,500.

October 28th at Red Bank High School
Chattanooga - Get ready for some excitement as Siskin Hospital's National Wheelchair Basketball team, the Rebounders, takes on Red Bank High School's Boys Varsity Basketball team in a Wheelchair Basketball Benefit Game.
The Wheelchair Basketball Benefit Game will start at 7:00 p.m. on October 28 at Red Bank High School's Gym. Tickets to the Benefit Game are $10.
Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation and Red Bank High School have teamed up to help raise money for the Rebounders, Red Bank High School's Boys Varsity Basketball Team, and Red Bank High School's Health Occupations Students of America.
Since 1999, Siskin Hospital has sponsored the Rebounders, a team in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) that has been burning wheels and setting records for almost ten years. The Rebounders won the Division III National Championship in 2005.
Ranging in age from teenagers to adults in their 60's, the Rebounders team practices weekly and travels from October to February competing in tournaments nationwide. The Rebounders are a co-ed team open to players with all degrees of physical disability. The rules and levels of physical contact are just like able-bodied college basketball. The only exception is that the chair is part of the players' body, performing quick moves, sprints, pivots, and body-bumping picks required by the sport.
The Rebounders uniforms, travel expenses, transportation, and equipment are sponsored by Siskin Hospital. Each year Siskin Hospital employees volunteer to sell tickets, t-shirts, and concessions at the Siskin Hospital home tournaments. The Benefit Game will be the team's largest fundraising event of the year, and will provide community awareness and education of Wheelchair Sports. The team hopes to show the competitiveness and skill level of playing Wheelchair Basketball.
Red Bank High School's Boys Varsity Basketball team will also rely on this Benefit Game to raise money for equipment and uniforms. The team will be borrowing sport wheelchairs to use for the game and will have several practices with the Rebounders team leading up to the big game night.
The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) at Red Bank High School will also benefit from the game. HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education. The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science technology education students, therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the health care community. The money raised will help cover costs for students to travel to National HOSA Conferences.
Red Bank High School is hoping to increase student awareness of some of the challenges and accomplishments people with disabilities experience. The Rebounders instill confidence and a sense of camaraderie in its players and continue to expand ideas of what it means to be a disabled athlete. This fast paced, competitive game, compiled with talented athletes, is an example that there is a fun way to get exercise regardless of a disability. This competitive spirit and willingness to make the best of any situation exemplifies the players' character and Siskin Hospital is honored to be the Rebounders sponsor.
"If you've never been to a wheelchair basketball game, you don't know what you've missed! There is unbelievable talent on the floor and the Wheelchair Basketball games are a fun experience for everyone. We hope you will join us in supporting the Rebounders team, Red Bank High School's Boys Varsity Basketball team, and the Health Occupations Students of America at Red Bank High School," said Lisa Morgan, Department Coordinator for Recreational Therapy at Siskin Hospital.
To purchase tickets or for more information on the Wheelchair Basketball Benefit Game, please call Lisa Morgan at 423.634.1674 or call Red Bank High School's Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, John Cherne, at 423.874.1900, ext. 2140. You may also visit www.siskinrehab.org for more information.

Chattanooga-- The 18th Annual Siskin Hospital Golf Classic will be held on October 7th at Council Fire Golf Course in Chattanooga. A 1:00 p.m. shotgun start will begin the round of golf at Council Fire's beautiful and challenging course.
Dedication to excellence is the reason that, year after year, the Siskin Hospital Golf Classic is Chattanooga's premier golfing event. Loyalty from the community has helped to keep this tradition alive each year.
This is the sixth year of the Chairman's Club, a special opportunity for participants to give back to Siskin Hospital. The hospital has received an overwhelming response this year and would like to thank the golfers and sponsors who stepped up to the plate to join this elite group- the 2008 Chairman's Club, an impressive 92% of our roster.
Siskin Hospital salutes this year's Platinum Sponsors, including Chattanooga Coca-Cola Bottling Company, COS Business Products & Interiors, Erlanger Health System, Russ Blakely and Associates, Unum, and BlueCross BlueShield. The hospital is proud to note that both Coca-Cola and COS Business Products & Interiors have been major underwriters for all eighteen tournaments.
Thanks to Russ Blakely and Associates, and back by popular demand, all golfers once again have the chance to walk away with $20,000 in cash for the "Hole In One" prize on the twelfth hole. The cash prize will be on display courtesy of SunTrust Bank at the tournament entrance. Kelly Cadillac has, for the 18th consecutive year, sponsored the "Hole In One" prize for the fourth hole, a 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid two-year lease. Siskin Hospital greatly appreciates the support of these sponsors. Their commitment and generosity make the Golf Classic tournament a success year after year.
Every dollar raised at the Siskin Hospital Golf Classic goes to the hospital's Charity Care Fund, which helps improve the lives of disabled individuals and their families. This year, proceeds from the tournament will support programs that are unique to Siskin Hospital and are not covered by insurance or Medicare. Such examples include the Adaptive Golf Clinic and the Wheelchair Basketball program.
Siskin Hospital employees would like to thank all of those who support the hospital's mission to enrich the lives of the patients served each day. Together, with the community's involvement, Siskin Hospital is able to provide new opportunities and hope to thousands of patients and their families.
The Siskin Hospital Golf Classic is an annual event held each year at Council Fire Golf Course. It is hosted by Siskin Hospital and staffed by employee volunteers.
